EDITOR’S NOTE: Business Ethics Quarterly invited a number of scholars involved with BEQ over its first twenty years (especially in its early years, as editors or editorial board members) to offer their reflections on the past, present, and future of business ethics. The resulting comments, which appear below, are as diverse and eclectic as the group of scholars who have given their energies to BEQ over the years.

By comparing Pierre Klossowski’s works on Nietzsche and the Marquis de Sade, the paper attempts to clarify his understanding of the part played by the ‘bodily remainder’ in recruiting a following of readers to their texts. Klossowski’s designation of the ‘simulacrum’ of eternal return in Nietzsche’s philosophy is compared with his account of the role played by sodomy in Sade’s writings. Klossowski contends that, through these figures, a bodily contagion, is communicated to the reader, but esoterically: that is, only to (...) a select few, whose bodies can replicate the impulses that the text conceals. Ultimately, what Klossowski’s interpretations of Nietzsche and Sade achieve, however, is the dissimulation of identity, as well as of a decisive difference between the reader and the philosopher whom she reads. Nostalgic, socially privileged ideals of childhood have actively contributed to the formation of Australian national identity, as well as modern subject-formations more broadly. This paper argues that, while such nostalgia has been drawn on for normative ends—in the service of the management of the modern individual—nostalgia also has the power to disrupt our conceptions of the normal. In the context of the contemporary “crisis” of childhood particularly, opportunities to reconstitute ideals of “childhood” and “family” differently have become available to communities (...) such as Aboriginal Australians, who previously have been denied access to these nostalgic forms. BackgroundThe ARRIVE (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments) guidelines are widely endorsed but compliance is limited. We sought to determine whether journal-requested completion of an ARRIVE checklist improves full compliance with the guidelines.MethodsIn a randomised controlled trial, manuscripts reporting in vivo animal research submitted to PLOS ONE (March–June 2015) were randomly allocated to either requested completion of an ARRIVE checklist or current standard practice. Authors, academic editors, and peer reviewers were blinded to group allocation. Trained reviewers performed outcome adjudication (...) in duplicate by assessing manuscripts against an operationalised version of the ARRIVE guidelines that consists 108 items. Our primary outcome was the between-group differences in the proportion of manuscripts meeting all ARRIVE guideline checklist subitems.ResultsWe randomised 1689 manuscripts (control: n = 844, intervention: n = 845), of which 1269 were sent for peer review and 762 (control: n = 340; intervention: n = 332) accepted for publication. No manuscript in either group achieved full compliance with the ARRIVE checklist. Details of animal husbandry (ARRIVE subitem 9b) was the only subitem to show improvements in reporting, with the proportion of compliant manuscripts rising from 52.1 to 74.1% (X2 = 34.0, df = 1, p = 2.1 × 10−7) in the control and intervention groups, respectively.ConclusionsThese results suggest that altering the editorial process to include requests for a completed ARRIVE checklist is not enough to improve compliance with the ARRIVE guidelines. Other approaches, such as more stringent editorial policies or a targeted approach on key quality items, may promote improvements in reporting. (shrink)

La nouvelle traduction française ici offerte est accompagnée d’une édition annotée qui restitue l’orthographe médiévale du latin d’Ockham. Il en va de même pour la nouvelle traduction du début du premier commentaire logique d’Ockham, l’Expositio (...) in librum Porphirii De predicabilibus, dont le moment fort est l’interprétation des questions de Porphyre sur les universaux. Claude Lafleur et Joanne Carrier Suivant l’ordre traditionnel à son époque d’un cours sur la « Vieille Logique », ou Ars Vetus, Ockham, après avoir commenté l’Isagoge de Porphyre et les Catégories d’Aristote, en vient à son Expositio in librum Perihermenias Aristotelis, dont on offre ici une traduction française et une édition orthographique de la partie considérée alors comme le Proême, une partie divisée elle-même en trois parties — l’exégèse du Vénérable incepteur insistant très fortement sur le début de la (...) deuxième partie et, de façon notable, encore plus spécialement sur ce que signifie une « passion de l’âme », autrement dit, pour Ockham lui-même et surtout pour nous, un « concept ». Ce faisant, quant aux thèmes de l’intellection et de l’abstraction en particulier, une attention constante est portée au lien, parfois critique mais toujours fécond, existant entre cette portion de la Logica « Ingredientibus » et sa source principale, l’In « Isagogen » Porphyrii Commentorum Editio secunda de Boèce, dont l’article précédent fournit une présentation, le texte latin révisé et la première traduction française.As a preliminary study to the new critical edition and to the original French translation presented, in this thematic issue, of the first part of Abelard’s Logica “Ingredientibus” : Super Porphyrium, this article first operates a global survey of the text, dwelling upon the account of universals, and then elaborates upon three difficult doctrinal points, somehow problematic in recent historiography : the third signification of universal nouns ; the prisciano-platonic conception of divine thought ; the univocity of the notion of status. So doing, especially in regard to the themes of intellection and abstraction, a constant attention is given to the link, sometimes critical but always fruitful, existing between this portion of the Logica « Ingredientibus » and its main source, Boethius’ In “Isagogen” Porphyrii Commentorum Editio secunda, of which the preceding article offers a presentation, the revised Latin text, and the first French translation. Cet article se penche sur la doctrine de l’abstraction chez les néo-scolastiques et ses sources immédiates pour en évaluer la fidélité par rapport à ses sources ultimes , avec insistance - terminologique et conceptuelle - sur la distinction thomasienne entre abstraction et séparation , une distinction aussi présente dans des textes de maîtres ès arts de l’Université de Paris contemporains ou même antérieurs, une distinction capitale - est-il rappelé en conclusion - par laquelle l’Aquinate limite épistémologiquement la portée de la (...) théologie philosophique. On prépare ainsi l’étude du témoignage jusqu’ici inédit des Communia logice sur ce thème de l’abstraction et de la séparation. (shrink)

The purpose of this article is first to enrich the exposition on the contribution of the magistri artium in Claude Panaccio’s Le Discours intérieur by an in-depth scrutiny of a quotation from the Latin al-Fārābī ending the presentation of logic in the Divisio scientiarum (ca. 1250) of the Parisian Arts Master Arnoul of Provence (Arnulfus Provincialis). Once accomplished this revision using the various Latin versions or adaptations of the Farabian Enumeration of the sciences (Iḥṣāʾ al-ʿulūm) by Gerard of Cremona and (...) Gundissalinus, it is clear that, despite a certain duality in its manuscript tradition, the relevant passage in Arnulfus Provincialis’s Divisio scientiarum does not merely distinguish inner logos and external logos, but also considers, like its source, a third logos, and that in a way susceptible to refine the characterization of al-Fārābī’s triadic logos as Le Discours intérieur reports this triade at the occasion of its judicious comparison with a parallel doctrine in John Damascene (Ekdosis akribès tès orthodoxou pisteôs alias De fide orthodoxa) interpreted differently by Thomas Aquinas following Albert the Great. Résumé Sans négliger les autres documents pertinents dans un tour d’horizon final et comparatif, cette étude s’efforce de dépeindre l’enseignement universitaire de la philosophie tel qu’il se reflète dans le miroir des textes didascaliques artiens de Paris jusqu’au mitan du xiiie siècle, tout en fournissant en annexe un premier répertoire, encore partiel, de ce corpus, avec ses éditions et ses traductions. Malgré son caractère généralement pratique et institutionnel, certains de ses éléments théoriques — comme la mise en relief de la (...) liaison intime, trame sapientielle de ces écrits de maîtres ès arts, entre théologie cosmique et éthique philosophique — permettent d’espérer que cet article apporte une véritable contribution à l’Histoire de la philosophie.Without neglecting the other relevant documents in a final comparative survey, this study tries to depict the university teaching of philosophy as reflected in the mirror of the Parisian didascalical texts of the Arts Faculty during the first half of the thirteenth century, while giving in appendix a first repertory, still partial, of this corpus, with its editions and translations. Notwithstanding its generally practical and institutional character, some of its theoretical elements — such as the highlighting of the close relationship between cosmical theology and ethical philosophy, a sapiential thread in those arts masters writings — it is hoped that this article may prove a genuine contribution to the History of philosophy. Sont ici offertes une traduction française et une édition orthographique, avec un tableau de correspondance intertextuelle, de ce De conceptu, qui, massivement, paraît avoir été « magistralement » compilé à partir de l’excursus de l’Expositio in Prohemium libri Peryermenias Aristotelis, aussi traduit et édité de la (...) sorte, ci-dessus, dans ce dossier. Major theme in the history of philosophy, the problem of universals has been transmitted to the Latin West mainly through the exegesis that, in his Second commentary on the Isagoge, Boethius gave of the famous Porphyrian questionnaire on the genera and species. Our study focuses on the series of philosophical key concepts, sometimes difficult to define, which, in this seminal commentary, form the redactional framework, often misunderstood, of the Boethian Solution of an Aporia that claims to have demonstrated the impossibility (...) of the existence of the genera and species (among others by the argument of the regressus ad infinitum), as well as the redhibitory defects of their (consonant or not consonant) intellections. For Boethius, all this is basically about the relation between thought and reality. (shrink)
